Frequently Asked
Questions

Are you HETAS registered?

Yes. Wood Stove Systems is a HETAS registered installer. HETAS is the competent person scheme for solid fuel appliances in England and Wales, which means we can self-certify our installations under the Building Regulations and issue a certificate of compliance, with no separate building control application needed.

Do I need a chimney to have a wood burning stove?

No. If your home has no chimney, or the existing one is unsuitable, we can install a stainless steel twin-wall insulated flue system, routed either inside the property or up an outside wall, so a freestanding stove can be fitted in almost any room.

Do I need a chimney liner?

In most installations we recommend and fit a flexible stainless steel flue liner. A liner gives a continuous sealed flue from the stove to the top of the chimney, improves draw and efficiency, and reduces the build-up of soot and tar deposits inside the chimney.

What is the difference between a wood burning stove and a multi-fuel stove?

A wood burning stove is designed to burn logs only, on a flat bed of ash. A multi-fuel stove has a raised grate and ash pan so it can burn logs as well as smokeless coal and other approved solid fuels. We install both types and can advise which suits your home and the fuel available to you.

Do I need planning permission for a stove?

Fitting a stove inside your home does not normally require planning permission, and most external twin-wall flues fall within permitted development rights. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats can have additional requirements, which we check for you during the free survey.

Can I have a stove in a smoke control area?

Yes, provided the stove is an exempt appliance approved for use in smoke control areas and you burn dry, seasoned wood or an authorised smokeless fuel. We can confirm whether your address is in a smoke control area and recommend a suitable stove.

What does a stove installation involve?

A typical installation into an existing fireplace involves opening up the builder's opening, finishing the chamber, fitting a flue liner and closure plate, installing a suitable hearth and then fitting and commissioning the stove. All rubble is removed and the work area is left clean and tidy.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Colwyn Bay and install stoves across North Wales, including Llandudno, Conwy, Abergele, Rhyl, Prestatyn, Rhuddlan, St Asaph and Holywell, as well as Cheshire.
